Het Ramplaankwartier is gebouwd op een zandafgraving. In de 17e eeuw was er veel zand nodig voor de vele stadsuitbreidingen van Haarlem en Amsterdam: voor de ophoging van bouwterreinen en voor de aanleg van verdedigingswallen. Het kwartier dankt zijn naam aan de regentenfamilie Ramp, die in de tweede helft van de 15e eeuw gronden rond het huis Rolland hadden verworven.
Een van de langste straten in het Ramplaankwartier is de Rollandslaan, genoemd naar het huis Rolland. De naam Rolland is waarschijnlijk afgeleid van “rode land”, wat betekent “gerood” land: land dat reeds ontgonnen is. De vroegste geschiedenis van dit huis ligt in het duister. Zeker is dat het al bestond omstreeks 1250.
Midden in het bloembollengebied bouwt Bloemendaal rond 1919 Tuindorp, dat nu onderdeel is van het Ramplaankwartier. De bebouwing wordt verder uitgebreid als Haarlem in 1927 dit tuindorp annexeert. Tijdens de oorlog slopen de Duitsers huizen van kwekers langs de Houtvaart en woonhuizen aan de Zijlweg. In 1958 werd begonnen met de aanleg van de Westelijke Randweg.
