De geschiedenis van De Krim begint bij De Delft, de vaart die in de veertiende eeuw werd gegraven en de westzijde van het gebied markeert. Het stuk land behoorde oorspronkelijk tot de gemeente Bloemendaal. In 1927 werd “Over de Delft” door Haarlem overgenomen. Dat was het begin van de ontwikkeling van de wijk. Vermoedelijk kreeg Overdelft de bijnaam “De Krim” door de afgelegen ligging tussen vaart en spoor.
In het begin van de 20e eeuw werd de beschikbare ruimte voor de bouw van goedkope arbeiderswoningen binnen de grenzen van Haarlem steeds schaarser. Hierdoor kwamen omvangrijke woningbouwactiviteiten op het grondgebied van de gemeente Schoten op gang. In 1927 annexeerde de gemeente Haarlem de gemeenten Schoten en Spaarndam, delen van Bloemendaal, Heemstede, Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude.
Andersom dus van Bloemendaal uit richting de rotonde op de Zeeweg, ziet men het pal na de kruising korte Zijlweg/ Duinlustweg geplaatste 70 km bord als een uitnodiging om alvast ruim voor dit bord de snelheid te verhogen.
