In het begin van de 20e eeuw werd de beschikbare ruimte voor de bouw van goedkope arbeiderswoningen binnen de grenzen van Haarlem steeds schaarser. Hierdoor kwamen omvangrijke woningbouwactiviteiten op het grondgebied van de gemeente Schoten op gang. In 1927 annexeerde de gemeente Haarlem de gemeenten Schoten en Spaarndam, delen van Bloemendaal, Heemstede, Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude.
We hebben weer nieuws over de gemeentelijke herindeling van Spaarndam. De Dorpsraad Spaarndam heeft afgelopen woensdag (31 januari) bij de vaste Tweede Kamercommissie voor Binnenlandse Zaken een pleidooi gehouden om Spaarndam één dorp te maken. Dit naar aanleiding van het fusieproces tussen haarlemmermeer en Haarlemmerliede & Spaarnwoude. Jolijt de Jongh: “Ik had drie minuten om te vertellen, en er waren zeven minuten voor vragen van commissieleden. De 7 minuten zijn volledig op-bevraagd. Ik merkte daaruit oprechte interesse.”
Dorpsvereniging Haarlemmerliede & Spaarnwoude heeft een ander alternatief voorgesteld: indien de kolenoverslag van Rietlanden vervalt, dit terrein dan beschikbaar stellen voor het knooppunt.
